Older persons' housing guide

As part of the Housing Market Renewal Initiative Sheffield County Council had the opportunity to fund a project to engage with Transform South Yorkshire to produce models of high quality housing design for older people, which was flexible and adaptable to meet changing needs.

The purpose of the guide is to offer a set of design principles for older persons’ housing so that the design and mix of new housing promotes lifelong independence. The guide looks at housing for 50+ year olds in good health, which can accommodate future changes in the resident’s social, physical and mental conditions. It sets out a schedule of accommodation with specific requirements that SCC expect will be met in the design of general needs housing. The guide offers some illustrative models of particular components of older persons’ housing and includes some models that best illustrate the findings of the consultation.
